Contingent Workforce Update: The Gamemakers Are At It Again

In The Hunger Games, Seneca Crane and Plutarch Heavensbee make up
the rules for the games as they go along. The players never quite know what they’re getting into. While companies in the contingent workforce space don’t face literal death upon a misclassification or joint employment finding, the ramifications can be pretty harsh. Taking their cue from the gamemakers, the Department of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board keep changing the rules of the game. The states are updating their tests too. Learn what’s changing in 2023, and may the odds be ever in your favor.

Please join me for the 2020 Master Class on Labor Relations and Employment. We’ll be holding three sessions:

  • New York City, Jan. 22, 2020
  • Los Angeles, Feb. 25, 2020
  • San Francisco, Feb. 27, 2020

My session this year is called Employee vs. Independent Contractor: “Who Are You?”; Explaining the Jumbled State of the Law Using Songs by The Who.

I have a running list of songs I’m planning to use. Some of the titles certain to make the cut are “I Can’t Explain,” “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” and “The Real Me.”

Attendees will choose six classes from a menu of 12, and everyone will receive a customized schedule so you can attend the sessions that interest you the most.

I hope to see you all there.  Let me know if you are planning to attend, and I will have your registration fee waived.  (“I’m Free!”)

2019 master class logoPlease join me and my colleagues in the Employment Group at Baker Hostetler for the 2019 Master Class on Labor Relations and Employment Law.  This year’s event will take place in three locations:

I will be presenting on the Gig Economy: Labor Relations Issues, with my colleague Peter Fischer.  We’ll cover 2018-19 developments in joint employment (there are many!) and the future of portable benefits for gig economy workers.

One of the best parts about the format of the Master Class is the ability to customize your day. Each attendee will choose 6 of 12 possible classes to attend and will receive a customized schedule. We’ve added several new hot topics to this year’s program, including #MeToo, Artificial Intelligence, and Union Organizing through Social Justice Campaigns.

To register, click here, or you can contact me directly at tlebowitz@bakerlaw.com.  If you list me as the attorney who invited you, I will have your admission fee waived.

More information is available by clicking the links to any of the cities listed above.

I hope to see you there!
